It was completed in just 11 1/2 months, and opened for business on December 29, 1926. Flagler's inspiration for the building's exterior and interior was the Italian Renaissance. The Breakers' interiors echoed his Ponce de Leon hotel masterpiece, and were adorned with Venetian chandeliers, gilded ceilings, and paintings of famous Renaissance rulers.
